SINGAPORE (AP) — China’s defense minister defended sailing a warship across the path of an American destroyer and Canadian frigate transiting the Taiwan Strait, telling a gathering of some of the world’s top defense officials in Singapore on Sunday that such so-called “freedom of navigation” patrols are a provocation to China.In his first international public address since becoming defense minister in March, Gen. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Sixteen Venezuelan and Colombian migrants who entered the country through Texas were flown to California by chartered plane and dropped off outside a church in Sacramento, Gov. Gavin Newsom and migrant rights advocates said Saturday. The young men and women were dropped off Friday outside the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento with only a backpack’s worth of belongings each, said Eddie Carmona, campaign director at PICO California, a faith-based community organizing group that has been assisting the migrants. The migrants had already been processed by U.S. immigration officials and given court dates for their asylum cases when “individuals representing a private contractor” approached them outside a migrant center in El Paso, Texas, Carmona said. LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An American Airlines flight headed for Dallas, Texas was forced to land in Las Vegas Saturday afternoon due to mechanical issues. According to Harry Reid International Airport, a bird collided with American Airlines flight 2845, causing it to make an emergency landing in Las Vegas around 1:10 p.m. Some Apple customers frustrated by new savings accounts Flight 2845 departed from Salt Lake City, Utah, and was headed to Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport. Five people were treated for injuries Saturday evening as a result of an apartment fire in Aurora, fire officials said.Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire, which was in the second and third stories of the Park Place at Exposition residential building.One person was hurt seriously, and two others also were transported to a hospital, according to Aurora Fire Rescue. Two people with minor injuries were treated at the scene and released.The Red Cross was assisting because people in as many as 60 units in the complex on Exposition, a block east of Havana, may have been displaced by the two-alarm fire.Latest news
