Jordan, Scalise locked in tight race to succeed McCarthy On to the next.Jockeying to be the next Speaker of the House is in full swing after Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) shocking ouster, with the two declared candidates — Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — lobbying for support and lawmakers beginning to pick sides in what is expected to be an intense race.Endorsements are rolling in for each of the candidates, and both are making the rounds to various groups within the GOP conference to earn support.A clear front-runner has yet to emerge. And some lawmakers are wondering if any candidate will be able to garner enough support to win the gavel.“From having gone through the Speaker fight in January, I don’t think there was a path for Scalise to get the votes then and talking to colleagues I don’t think there will be a path now. And right now it’s not clear that Jim has a path either,” Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), who endorsed Jordan, told The Hill Thursday. That could g...

Halloween décor in Glens Falls prompts fire department response GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (WPIX) – Firefighters in an upstate New York town mistakenly thought a Halloween decoration was a house fire. What first looked like a house in flames ended up being an illusion. The bright orange flames lighting up the interior of the home were so convincing that Glens Falls dispatchers sent crews to the Sanford Street address for "a report of a confirmed structure fire." The firefighters were so impressed that they got permission to post the house on their social media accounts, even telling people to go check them out.“To our surprise this was an amazing Halloween decoration,” fire officials wrote on Facebook. “This display will be up Friday and Saturday nights for the public’s entertainment until the end of the month.”The homeowners created the jaw-dropping display using "two LED lights, a box fan and a silver sheet," combined with a fog machine, according to the fire depart...

Kiszla: Who’s the only person that can stop Nuggets center Nikola Jokic from becoming top 10 player in basketball history? Only one person can stop Nuggets center Nikola Jokic from becoming one of the top 10 players in basketball history.Who is that person? Well, in our dusty old cowtown, we fondly call him the Joker.Jokic loves basketball, but hates saying goodbye to the peace and comfort of his home in Serbia for the hoopla and hassle of being the best player in the NBA. So here’s my advice: Cherish every minute he wears a Nuggets uniform.“Will Niklola be a guy that plays 20 years in the NBA? No. I’d be shocked if he played 20 years in the NBA,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told me, as we stood outside the Denver locker room on the eve of training camp.At the top of his game at age 28, Jokic might not be done getting better. And for those of you keeping score at home: While leading the Nuggets to 16 victories during the NBA playoffs, capped by beating the Miami Heat in the Finals, he was even more dominant on the court last season than the prior two years, when Joker was named the league’s most ...

Michael Porter Jr. sprains ankle, Peyton Watson adds muscle and Nikola Jokic has officiating questions at Nuggets training camp SAN DIEGO — If the Nuggets’ starters stay healthy, the same quintet that won Denver its first NBA championship this summer will be difficult to bet against in 2023-24.But two days into training camp, the first small reminder arrived of how fragile this all can be. Michael Porter Jr. suffered a sprained ankle Wednesday and is unlikely to play Friday when the Nuggets hope to hold a full 48-minute scrimmage at their final San Diego practice. Porter didn’t participate in live action during Thursday’s practice. He generally plays with a brace on his left leg, a byproduct of three back surgeries dating back to 2017.The injury isn’t particularly serious, but between Porter’s injury history and the short offseason Denver is returning from, coach Michael Malone chose to give all his starters a break from live basketball Thursday. He also canceled the Nuggets’ evening shooting session.“Third practice in a row; want to kind of be mindful of their bodie...

CSU set to begin conference play with offensive stars shining Colorado State will be the last Mountain West team to begin conference play when the Rams travel to Logan, Utah on Saturday to face Utah State.Coming off back-to-back wins over Middle Tennessee and Utah Tech, the Rams have both confidence and momentum heading into their eight-week league slate, mostly thanks to an offense finally hitting its stride.Case in point, the Rams’ passing game is one of the best in the nation, with quarterback Brandon Fowler-Nicolosi, receiver Tory Horton and tight end Dallin Holker among the national statistical leaders in several categories.“We just have some players that are special and when they get their hands on the ball, good things happen,” CSU head coach Jay Norvell said. “So, we’ve just got to continue to put the ball in their hands and let them make plays and do what they do. I think Brayden has a lot of confidence in those guys, but we can certainly grow. We’re still not really scratching the surface of what we are capable of as a team.”Since ta...
